Presbyopia

The majority of the people above 40 years of age start to notice it is harder to read the newspaper. This is due to the eye's lens gets wider with time and gives the ciliary, the muscles that help the lens to contract, have less space to function properly, i.e. to contract the lens.

The result is that the eye cannot accommodate, i.e. lens can't change itself to adapt the eye to see on different distances. This means for a normal sighted person cannot focus on near object, but on the contrary better see objects from longer distances.

To compensate this reading glasses is used to see in shorter distances. The older the person is, the stronger reading glasses is usually needed.

Methods to get rid of the reading glasses

There are a number of methods to get rid of the reading glasses:

1. LAPR (Laser Presbyopia reversal)
2. Monovision
3. CLE (Clear Lens Extraction)

1. LAPR (Laser Presbyopia reversal)
In the LAPR method, an eye surgeon uses laser to perform 8 radial incisions. This simple procedure increases the dimension of the eyeball thus creating the necessary space for the ciliary muscles to flex. Both eyes are operated and takes one hour to perform.

Primary qualification criteria for LAPR:

No distant vision correction (glasses, lenses); if the patient has this problem, then he/she should decide to undergo a laser vision correction at least six months earlier.
Practically full vision acuity in both eyes (ability to read the whole table without glasses),
Astigmatism lower than 0.75 D
Normal intracapsular pressure
Generally in good health and without eye diseases
No history of ophthalmic procedures (like cataract, glaucoma)
Allowed defect in both eyes: +/- 0.5 D

The patient can see better already on the next day - but it is important to do rehabilitation to sustain the effect.

Eyes need to be trained daily (a set of very simple exercises that can be done in a few minutes). It is also important not to wear glasses, even if the patient feels the need to do so.

Complications:

The eyes can be red 3-4 weeks after the procedure.
Eye dryness that last few days after the operation.
Bluish colour on the eye white there the laser has cut. Will vanish as the time goes.

2. Monovision
The idea behind Monovision is that the patient has one eye to see objects from long distances and the second eye to read with. One eye is made right sighted, usually the dominant eye. The other eye is made nearsighted, the eye you should read with.

There are of course pros and coins with this method:

On the negative side:
The judgements of distances is not good as with two eyes.
Nearsightedness is not as good as using reading glasses when both eyes are used for reading.

On the positive side:
Not depending on reading glasses Greater freedom.
Can be completed with glasses for near or long distance when you want to see extra good.

Monovision is a permanent method and it's good if you test the combination with two different seeing by your optician.

3. CLE (Clear Lens Extraction)

With Clear Lens Extraction means that you exchange the lens of the eye with a plastic lens (RESTOR) just like a cataract procedure.

The RESTOR lens is constructed to see on different distances. From long to near and between.
