How to read your
eye glass prescription?
|
||||||||||||||||||
| Sphere | Cylinder | Axle | |
| OD/Right | -3,75 | 0,75 | - 90 |
| OS/Left | -3,00 | -1,00 | 175 |
The Latin terms OD (Oculus Dextrum) and OS (Oculus Sinistrum) means the right and left eye respectively.
The Sphere indicate the extent of your defect, i.e. how much
myopia or hyperopia you have. A plus sign (+) front of the value means
hyperopia and a minus sign (-) means myopia.
Cylinder means the measured astigmatism, i.e. the refraction
error in the central part of the cornea. If you have astigmatism your
cornea is not formed like a sphere, but shaped more like an American
football or the backside of a spoon. Which direction this irregular
bending has vary from person to person.
Axle describes the direction in grades from the horizontal line.
The co-ordinate system for the prescription goes from 0 to 180 degrees
with 90 grades vertically or "twelve o'clock".
